On May 9, 2006 NIMM held the celebration of the 45^th foundation (1961 - 2006). Associate Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Trung Chien Minister of Health attended this ceremony. In the past 45 years:

1/ NIMM has investigated wild medicinal material resources in Vietnam and identified:

3948 species of medicinal plants

408 species of medicinal animals

75 medicinal minerals

52 species of medicinal algae

Currently, there are also 206 species with large reserves in 22 provinces (55 regions) with the total reserves of 121.000 tonnes.

2/ NIMM has investigated natural material resources:

So far, the country has cultivated 133 species of medicinal plants mainly in 18 traditional cultivated regions.

Total of cultivated medicinal material volume : 20.000 tonnes/year.

3/ NIMM has introduced medicinal plants from foreign countries:

It has successfully introduced over 300 species from China, Korea, Japan, India, Mexico and Eastern Euro countries.

Among of them, 60 species have been cultivated in large scale to such an extend that many people have thought that they are Vietnamese medicinal plants.

4/ NIMM has carried out successfully the research on planting 5 clean medicinal plants using GAP technology

5/ NIMM has carried out successfully the research on many new drugs:

Artemisinin: for malaria treatment.

Curcumin: for gastric ulcer treatment and prevention of stomach cancer.

Haina and Abivina: for the treatment of liver inflammation and cirrhosis.

Agerhinin: for the treatment of sinusitis and allergic nose inflammations

Angobin: for the enhancement of brain circulation

Mudanin: for diabetic treatment

Panacrin: for gastric cancer treatment

NIMM has recently successfully extracted acid shikimic from Illicium verum Hook. et Thoms and introduced Hypericum perforatum containing hypericin for the drug development for H5N1 birdflu treatment.

6/ NIMM has trained post-graduates since 1979

NIMM has trained the tens of PhD in pharmacognosy and pharmacology for Viet Nam , Cu Ba, Lao.

7/ NIMM has had cooperation with:

9/ NIMM has compiled and published the tens of great scientific books on medicinal materials in Vietnamese, English, French, and Journal of medicinal materials, Bulletin of medicinal materials. NIMM already had the website with two addresses: vienduoclieu.org.vn and www.nimm.org.vn and has participated in integrating, exchanging with the website apctt-tm.net in Vu Han- China .
